What Size Rug for a Living Room?

A person lying on Dapple rug, reading beside a white sofa in soft daylight.

Our current rugs are 200 × 300 cm, so the question is not which size to buy but whether that size suits your room. For a living room arranged around a sofa, three measurements answer it: the sofa’s width, the floor in front of it, and the room itself. Laid lengthways along a 210 cm three-seat sofa, the rug reaches 45 cm past each end, with room for the sofa’s front legs to rest on it.

This guide works through those measurements with the furniture our Find your fit drawing uses, then covers what is worth checking before the rug arrives: how it travels, which underlay suits it, and what you can do if it does not suit the room. If you would rather see it drawn, Find your fit draws it with your own sofa and room.

How a 200 × 300 cm rug sits with your sofa

Find your fit offers three sofas to draw: a two-seater 170 cm wide, a three-seater 210 cm wide and a four-seater 240 cm wide. Laid lengthways, with its 300 cm side along the sofa, the rug runs past both ends of all three. Turned, with its 200 cm side along the sofa, it runs past the ends of the two-seater only.

Sofa Rug lengthways Rug turned
Two-seater, 170 × 90 cm 65 cm past each end 15 cm past each end
Three-seater, 210 × 95 cm 45 cm past each end Sofa 10 cm wider than the rug
Four-seater, 240 × 95 cm 30 cm past each end Sofa 40 cm wider than the rug

For a three- or four-seat sofa, then, the rug goes lengthways. For a two-seater either way works, and the choice is about the room: turned, the rug’s 300 cm side runs out into the room instead of its 200 cm side.

If your sofa is another width, take its width away from 300 cm and halve what is left: that is how far the rug reaches past each end. Find your fit does the sum for you if you choose Custom and type your sofa’s width and depth.

Front legs on, all legs on, or in front

Find your fit offers three ways to place the rug with your sofa, and each one uses the rug’s 200 cm of depth differently.

  • Front legs on. The sofa’s front legs stand on the rug and its back legs on the floor. This is the arrangement our size guide suggests: placing the front legs of your sofa and occasional chairs on the rug helps the seating area feel connected.
  • All legs on. The whole sofa stands on the rug. A sofa 95 cm deep then uses 95 cm of the rug’s depth, which leaves at most 105 cm of rug in front of it.
  • In front. The rug lies in front of the sofa, clear of its legs, so all 200 cm of its depth sits out in the room.

The living room in Find your fit also has a 120 × 60 cm coffee table and an 85 × 85 cm armchair, so you can see how the pieces you already own might gather around the rug. Whichever way you place it, leave space around the outside so the floor still frames the rug.

Measure the room, not only the furniture

Start with your room. Mark out a 2 m × 3 m rectangle on the floor with masking tape, where you plan to lay the rug. Walk around it, open nearby doors and check how it sits with the furniture you already use. A taped outline shows what a tape measure cannot: a door that sweeps across the edge, or a path through the room that clips a corner.

To see the whole room drawn, type its length and width into Find your fit, anywhere from 1 to 12 metres. It draws the room’s outline around the rug at the same scale and labels the space left on each side in centimetres.

As a feel for the numbers: in a room 1 m longer and 1 m wider than the rug, 4 m by 3 m, a rug laid in the middle of the floor leaves 50 cm on every side. A room 5 m by 4 m leaves a metre all round.

Allow for the finished size, too. Each rug may vary by up to ±2% on each side: up to 4 cm across the width and 6 cm along the length. If a measurement is tight to the centimetre, give it those few centimetres.

Before the rug arrives

Your rug arrives rolled and wrapped: about 2.06 m long and around 20 kg. A courier brings it to your door, and someone aged 18 or over should be there to take it. Because of its length we cannot deliver to a PO box or a parcel locker, so give us a street address, and look at the way from your front door to the living room with a roll of that length in mind.

Keep the tape on the floor until the rug is in the room, and decide before you unroll it. A rug that is still rolled and never opened can come back for a refund of what you paid, less the return collection fee, if you email hello@elmsett.com within 30 days of delivery. Once a rug has been unrolled we can no longer sell it as new, so we do not refund an unrolled rug that is not faulty; what we can do is swap it for a different rug.

When you do unroll it, expect a few roll creases or a curled edge. They relax in the first 1–2 weeks as the rug settles, and laying it face up with the corners weighted speeds that up.

Underlay and underfloor heating

On a hard floor we recommend an underlay: it stops the rug moving, protects the backing and the floor, and makes the rug feel better underfoot. Choose one slightly smaller than the rug, about 5–10 cm in from each edge, so it stays hidden. For a 200 × 300 cm rug that is an underlay of about 180–190 cm by 280–290 cm. On hard floors, look for felt and natural rubber; cheap PVC underlays can mark some floor finishes, and rug tape can leave a sticky residue.

If your living room has underfloor heating, check with your heating manufacturer or installer before you lay the rug, and choose an underlay they approve. Each system limits how much insulation can cover it, and that limit counts the rug and its underlay together.

Choosing among our rugs

Every measurement above holds for each of our current rugs. They differ in colour and texture, and each rug’s page shows it in a room.

  • Halcyon: a quiet cream foundation with a finely pebbled texture, photographed in a bright living room with a cream cloud sofa.
  • Vesper: cream and taupe in a corded surface, photographed beside a charcoal sofa.
  • Dapple: a chunky, flecked texture in warm sand tones, photographed in front of a white sofa.

You can see them together among our wool blend rugs, or narrow them to cream rugs or beige and neutral rugs. If you are weighing up colours against your floor, our guide to cream, greige and sand works through them floor by floor.

Questions about living room rug size

Is there another size?

Our current rugs are a generous 200 × 300 cm. Need a second pair of eyes? Contact us with your room measurements.

What if my sofa is wider than 240 cm?

Take its width away from 300 cm and halve what is left to see how far the rug reaches past each end. A sofa wider than 300 cm runs past the rug at both ends; Find your fit says by how much when you type your sofa’s width under Custom.

Can I return the rug if it does not suit the room?

If it is still rolled and never opened, yes: email us within 30 days of delivery and we refund what you paid, less the return collection fee. An unrolled rug that is not faulty can be swapped for a different rug instead. The details are in our Returns policy.

Does Find your fit cover bedrooms and dining tables too?

Yes. It draws a bedroom around beds from single to king, and a dining room around four-, six- and eight-seat tables. For dining tables, our guide to rug size under a dining table works through the chairs.
