The 200 × 300 cm rug size guide: what fits in an Australian home

A 200 × 300 cm rug can bring a sofa and coffee table together, with the sofa’s front legs resting on the rug. With its longer edge across a queen or king bed, it can also give you room to step out. Dining tables need a closer check: measure the table and the chairs pulled back.

200 × 300 cm

Sofa 210 × 95 cm. Try placing the front legs of your sofa and occasional chairs on the rug.

Queen bed 153 × 203 cm. Mark out the rug beside or beneath your bed, and check the space you step onto in the morning.

Table 180 × 90 cm. Pull every chair back as if someone were getting up. Check that the chair legs stay on the rug.

Start with your room

Mark out a 2 m × 3 m rectangle with masking tape. Walk around it, open doors and drawers, and check your furniture in its everyday position. Pull chairs out. Allow for rug thickness where a door swings over the outline.

Is 200 × 300 cm enough for a sofa and coffee table?

Centre the 300 cm edge along a 180–230 cm sofa. Subtract the sofa width from 300 cm, then divide by two: a 180 cm sofa leaves 60 cm at each end; a 230 cm sofa leaves 35 cm.

A 220 cm sofa leaves 40 cm at each end. Try its front legs 20–30 cm onto the rug, with a 120 × 60 cm coffee table fully inside the tape. Check sofa depth, leg position and the gap to the table too.

In open-plan rooms, keep the kitchen walkway clear. If the chaise or occasional chairs extend beyond the tape, rearrange them or measure for a larger rug.

Is 200 × 300 cm big enough for a six-seat dining table?

Sometimes. Measure the table and chairs, rather than judging by seat count. Start with at least 60 cm beyond every table edge. Pull every chair back as if someone were getting up; all chair legs should stay on the rug.

Centre a 180 × 95 cm table lengthways. The ends have (300 − 180) ÷ 2 = 60 cm each; the sides have (200 − 95) ÷ 2 = 52.5 cm each. The sides fall short.

A 180 × 80 cm table leaves 60 cm on all four sides at nominal rug size. This is borderline: a finished rug can be smaller, and chairs differ. Allow more room if pulled-back chair legs catch or leave the edge.

How does it fit under a queen or king bed?

Run 300 cm across the bed and 200 cm from head to foot. Using approximate Australian mattress dimensions, a 153 × 203 cm queen leaves (300 − 153) ÷ 2 = 73.5 cm each side. A 183 × 203 cm king leaves 58.5 cm each side.

Starting one-third down a 203 cm mattress covers its lower two-thirds and leaves roughly 65 cm beyond the foot. Bedside tables stay off the rug. Measure the bed frame, which may be larger than the mattress, and check doors and drawers.

Rotating the rug puts 200 cm across the bed: only 23.5 cm remains each side of the queen mattress, or 8.5 cm beside the king. Direction changes the space under your feet.

When should you choose a larger rug?

Choose larger if the tape cannot connect your seats or pulled-back chairs leave its edges. Broad modular sofas, long tables and generous bed frames can change the answer.

How much floor should show around the rug?

Try 30–45 cm of visible floor as a visual starting point in an enclosed room, rather than a minimum room-size rule. Prioritise doors and usable walkways. In open-plan spaces, frame the seating zone instead of measuring from every wall.

A note on dimensions

The finished size may vary by up to ±2% on each side — up to 4 cm across the width and 6 cm along the length of a 200 × 300 cm rug. Allow for this when measuring.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum rug size for sofa front legs?

Measure sofa width, front-leg position, the coffee table and the gap between them. Start with 20–30 cm beyond each sofa end. A 220 cm sofa centred along the 300 cm edge leaves 40 cm each end; test depth with tape.

What changes between a 200 × 300 cm and a 240 × 330 cm rug?

Along the sofa, 330 cm adds 15 cm at each end; 240 cm adds 40 cm in the other direction. A centred 190 × 95 cm dining table leaves 70 cm at the ends and 72.5 cm at the sides on 240 × 330 cm.

How much floor should show?

Try 30–45 cm as a visual starting point in an enclosed room. Keep doors and walkways usable. In open-plan rooms, frame the seating zone rather than every wall.

Can a 200 × 300 cm rug fit a six-seat dining table?

Measure the table and pulled-back chairs. A 180 × 95 cm table leaves 60 cm each end, but only 52.5 cm each side: less than the 60 cm starting allowance.

Does it fit a queen or king bed?

With 300 cm across the mattress, an approximately 153 cm-wide queen leaves 73.5 cm each side; a 183 cm-wide king leaves 58.5 cm. Measure the frame too and tape the lower-two-thirds arrangement.

Can I use it in a narrow hallway or kitchen walkway?

Tape a 2 m × 3 m rectangle and check door swings and everyday circulation. If the outline occupies too much of the passage, choose dimensions suited to that space.

Try the masking-tape test before choosing. See the measurements in your room.
